BMW Recalls More Than Half a Million Vehicles

Posted On behalf of Simien & Simien on Jul 22, 2014 in Defective Products

BMW is recalling 573,935 of their popular 3 series vehicles, model years 2000 to 2006, in order to address a defect in the passenger side frontal air bag that could cause the air bag inflator to rupture upon deployment.

The auto manufacturer made the announcement in mid-July, but the exact number of vehicles being recalled in the U.S. was not precisely known. The recall is linked to the safety defect in air bag inflators manufactured by Takata.

The vehicles affected include:

  • Model year 2000 328i sedan and coupes
  • 2001-2005 325i sedans, coupes, convertibles and sports wagons
  • 2005-2005 325xi sedans and sports wagons
  • 2006 325i coupes and convertibles
  • 2001-2006 330i sedans, coupes and convertibles
  • 2001-2005 330xi sedans
  • 2001-2006 M3 coupes and convertibles

Excessive internal pressure could cause rupturing of the inflator which could result in metal fragments striking or injuring the passenger seat occupant. BMW is not aware of any injuries caused by this defect.

The company intends to notify owners, and dealers will replace the air bag for free. Owners should expect to receive an initial notice in August 2014 and then a secondary notice for when the replacement parts are available – likely by October.

If you or someone you know has been injured due to a defective vehicle part, the victim may be eligible to file a product liability claim. At Simien & Simien, we understand how a company’s small misstep can lead to disastrous consequences.
