Elyse Duckett, the 49-year-old firefighter who ran over and killed a surviving passenger of the Asiana Airlines Crash July 6, will not be charged in the death of 16-year-old Ye Mengyuan.
San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe explained that Duckett would not be charged criminally in Mengyuan’s death, and in a prepared statement noted the number of critically injured passengers that were saved because of Duckett and the other firefighters.
Investigators believe Mengyuan exited the plane and somehow became covered in firefighting foam, eventually winding up face down on the tarmac, which is how Duckett unknowingly ran her over.
The crash took the lives of three passengers, and it is still unclear to investigators how Mengyuan made her way from the plane to her final position on the tarmac. At the time of the report, an attorney for Mengyuan’s family stated that he was not surprised that criminal charges had not been filed against Duckett.
