Takata Facing Lawsuits over Defective Airbags

Takata Corporation as well as Honda Motors has been hit with a federal lawsuit over their defective airbags. The lawsuit was filed on Oct. 30.
According to court files, the suit is seeking class action status on behalf of all five million Honda owners affected by the Takata airbag recall. The lawsuit alleges that vehicle owners have not only suffered inconveniences, but also financial losses.
Honda owners have been inconvenienced as many have limited use of their vehicles and believe that their vehicles have also lost resale values. Additionally, Honda owners as well as owners of other makes and models recalled may have to wait months before their vehicles are repaired. Takata does not have enough replacement airbags to fix all of the recalled vehicles. The problem is so widespread that Toyota has received permission form the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to disable the airbags – a move that would otherwise be illegal.
Takata has agreed to add two production lines to create more airbags, but it is unclear if these two additional lines will meet the needs of an ever-growing number of recalled vehicles.
This lawsuit is one of two that have currently been filed, and it is likely that many more lawsuits will be filed as victims of the defective airbags come forward. Four deaths have been linked to these defective airbags, but the number of injury victims reported ranges between 30 and 130.
