Monday afternoon, an Amtrak train carrying nearly 200 passengers collided with a dump truck in Tangipahoa Parish off of Highway 51. None of the passengers were injured, however, the dump truck driver was taken to the hospital due to non-life threatening injuries.
The truck driver was listed in stable condition and is expected to recover from his injuries. The train hit the driver’s side of the vehicle and the driver was thrown out of the truck.
An investigation into the accident continues and authorities believe that the driver may have failed to yield at the crossing.
Highway 51 was closed in both directions for several hours as investigators worked to try to piece together what happened. According to authorities, the site of the crash has seen its fair share of similar accidents.
