Stryker Corp., manufacturer of thousands of recalled hip implants, has agreed to pay approximately $1 billion to resolve lawsuits over the hip implants they recalled in 2012.
The company withdrew its Rejuvenate and ABG II Modular-Neck hip stem implants from the market in July 2012 after warning surgeons that patients could have adverse reactions to the implants. The company faces 1,800 consolidated cases in St. Paul Minnesota while a New Jersey state judge is overseeing about 2,100 lawsuits over the devices.
The lawsuits filed allege that claimants suffered from high levels of metal debris in their blood as a result of being implanted with Stryker devices. When patients suffer from high levels of metal in their bloodstream it is known as metallosis, which can lead to gastrointestinal problems, recurring infections, nerve damage and much more.
The Stryker deal would be one of the highest amounts paid in the last year by an implant manufacturer to resolve claims by patients who believe they were injured by their hip replacement. Last year, Johnson & Johnson agreed to pay $2.5 billion to resolve lawsuits filed by 8,000 patients who suffered damages as a result of their ASR metal-on-metal hip devices.
