Denham Springs police officer James Foster, who was hit on his motorcycle while on duty Monday, has died from his injuries.
Foster, 39, died on Tuesday afternoon at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center of injuries sustained when a car turned in front of his motorcycle, sending him flying 80 feet before landing in the road. He had been responding to a wreck on I-12 and had taken O’Neal south to avoid traffic. He sustained fractures in the legs and arms, as well as chest trauma.
He was taken off of life support at 3:36 p.m. on Tuesday. He is survived by his wife, 19-year-old daughter and 18-year-old son.
Foster’s death was the first on-the-job fatality experienced by the Denham Springs police department, which has been in existence for more than 100 years.
According to Chief Scott Jones, Foster had joined DSPD on December 14, 2009, and had just celebrated 5 years with the department.
According to WAFB, Jones tearily described the scene at the hospital.
“They left him on life support, so people could come in and pay last respects, which was us, police officers. That was hardest part, the finality of it,” he said.
Accounts describe Foster as a generous, polite, moral and ethical man who was always willing to help others.
The driver who hit Foster was an elderly woman driving a 2008 Honda Accord. She has been cited with failure to yield turning left at an intersection.
Those mourning the officer can attend visitation tonight and tomorrow at Abundant Life Church, 206 Edgewood Dr., in Denham Springs. Friday service will last from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and Saturday service will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Foster’s burial will be held at Denham Springs Memorial Cemetery on North Range Ave. and Cockerham Rd. after the Saturday service at Abundant Life Church.
