Driver Sober Campaign Aims at Cracking down on DUIs

On Aug. 21, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration launched its annual "Drive Sober or Get Pulled" over campaign in an effort to crackdown on drunk drivers. The campaign continues through Labor Day weekend.

Approximately 10,000 law enforcement agencies across the country have joined the NHTSA's campaign to enforce a zero tolerance on drivers caught with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 or higher. The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development notes that on the interstate and state highways, officers will be on the lookout for drivers who are impaired, speeding or maneuvering their vehicles aggressively. If you have been injured in a car accident contact the Baton Rouge personal Injury attorneys at Simien & Simien to find out about your legal options.

AAA has estimated that 35.5 million Americans will be traveling over the holiday weekend. Additionally, low airline prices and the lowest gas prices in a decade are encouraging locals to travel rather than stay local.

The number of drunk drivers on the road has decreased over time, but motorists are still in danger. According to the NHTSA, the risk of a DUI accident increases between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. During Labor Day 2013, half of the auto accident fatalities occurred at night.

The number of alcohol-related crashes in Louisiana has continued to increase every year since 2011. Unfortunately, the number of DUI fatalities have also increased during this time period.

The best protection against a drunk driver is a seatbelt. If you intend to drink, always designate a sober driver or call a taxi in order to get home safely. If you see a driver who you believe is impaired, contact the authorities via a non-emergency line, it could save someone's life.

If you or someone you love is injured in a wreck caused by an impaired driver, contact the Baton Rouge car accident lawyers at Simien & Simien. We can help you obtain the compensation you need to get your life back on track.
