Background on Takata Airbag Recall

The Takata airbag recall is the largest and most complex automotive safety recall in U.S. history. It affects around 34 million vehicles that have approximately 46 million defective airbags installed.

These airbags have caused a total of 20 deaths worldwide, while more than 180 people have suffered injuries from these defective products.

The airbags were recalled because of a problem with the ammonium nitrate propellant. This chemical is used to create a small explosion that helps fill the airbag quickly during a crash. Unfortunately, this chemical can deteriorate over time, causing it to burn too fast when creating the explosion. This can cause one of the components of the airbag to blow apart, hurling shrapnel at drivers and passengers.

What to Do If Your Vehicle Is Affected

You can find out if your vehicle has been recalled by visiting the NHTSA’s Safety Issues & Recalls website and searching by your vehicle’s VIN number. If your vehicle is included in the Takata airbag recall, you should not drive it until the defective airbags have been replaced. Contact the dealer immediately to schedule this repair.

Because of the risk involved with the defective airbags, some automotive dealers will provide loaner vehicles until repairs can be completed, including:

  • Honda
  • Chrysler
  • Toyota
  • Nissan (on a case-by-case basis)
  • BMW
  • Subaru
  • Mazda
  • Mitsubishi
  • General Motors (on a case-by-case basis)
