Anadarko Ordered To Pay $159.5 Million for Role in BP Oil Spill

On Nov. 30, Anadarko Petroleum Corporation was ordered to pay $159.5 million in environmental penalties due to the 2010 BP oil spill. Anadarko Petroleum Corporation owned 25 percent of the Deepwater Horizon oil drill rig, which exploded, killing 11 workers and causing the largest offshore oil spill in United States history.

Louisiana Waterways Among Most Polluted in Country

Louisiana's rivers and streams are among the most toxic in the nation, according to a report by the Environment America Research and Policy Center. The toxic chemicals released into waterways include nitrates, dioxins and other poisonous chemicals. These toxins can cause cancer, birth defects, infertility, neurological problems and a host of other severe health issues.

Louisiana Will Receive $5 billion of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill Settlement

oil-spill.jpgEarlier this month, British Petroleum finalized its settlement with federal and state lawsuits as a result of the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. The total figure is a record $20.8 billion. The claim includes cleanup and restoration costs as well as $5.5 billion in penalties for violating the Clean Water Act. Included in this amount is $8.8 billion for coastal marsh restoration, with $5 billion guaranteed to the state of Louisiana. 

Oil Spills Could Be Prevented Under New Federal Safety Regulation

Environmental advocates estimate nearly 300 incidents involving oil pipelines occur per year on average. A new set of safety regulations release by the United States Department of Transportation hopes to reduce that number. 

Fertilizer Plant Reaches $2 Billion Settlement with U.S. Dept. of Justice

EPA-Settlement.jpgA major environmental victory has been won for communities in Florida and Louisiana. Mosaic Fertilizer, one of the largest fertilizer manufacturers of potash and phosphate fertilizers, reached a $2 Billion Settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice, as well as other federal and state environmental regulators. This ended a ten-year case initiated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The EPA stated that the company violated the federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act and other state hazardous waste laws.
