NHTSA has Noticed an Uptick in 2015 Traffic Fatalities

Traffic fatalities increased by 9.3 percent in the first nine months of 2015, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. More than 26,000 traffic deaths occurred during this time, compared with only 23,796 traffic deaths in the first nine months of 2014.

These statistics have caused alarm, especially since traffic deaths have been declining gradually since 2000. In fact, from 2000 to 2014, traffic fatalities declined by more than 22 percent.

The NHTSA attributes the increase in traffic fatalities in 2015 to more behavioral errors. Research shows that 94 percent of crashes are the result of human error. These human errors include behaviors such as:

• Distracted driving
• Drunk or drugged driving
• Unrestrained passengers and drivers
• Speeding

Currently, the NHTSA has been holding a series of cross-cutting regional summits to combat and examine unsafe roadway behaviors and human choices that result in increased traffic fatalities.

Earlier this month the summit kicked off in Sacramento, California. These summits are being used to develop approaches that could save the lives of many people. Some methods include bringing awareness to the public and engaging new partners about the dangers of certain driving behaviors. A new initiative on the agenda has been protecting vulnerable pedestrians and cyclists from reckless roadway behaviors. The summit will culminate in a nationwide gathering in Washington, D.C.
