1.5 Million Ram Pickup Trucks Recalled for Airbag Issues

Fiat Chrysler has announced that they are recalling 1.5 million trucks to fix issues with side-impact and driver’s side airbags.

The trucks are being recalled for steering wheel wires that may be worn down after continual contact with a spring. This friction can lead to a short circuit that can then make the driver’s side airbag inflate suddenly.

According to Fiat Chrysler, approximately 1.35 million Ram pickup trucks and Chassis cab trucks, typically used as work trucks, have been affected. All of the vehicles are from the 2012 to 2014 model years.

The company is aware of two injuries caused by the sudden airbag deployment, but no crashes as a result of the defect have been reported. Airbag injuries typically include abrasions, bruising and even head trauma from the force of the airbag.

Additionally, Fiat Chrysler is recalling 188,000 Ram Quad Cab pickups from the 2014 and 2015 model years.

According to the auto manufacturer, the side curtain airbags do not comply with federal regulations and could fail to protect rear passengers during a rollover crash. Fortunately, there are no known crashes or injuries linked to this defect.

Vehicle owners will be sent a notice for when they can bring their truck in for repair at a local dealership.

Last year, a record number of recalls were announced for manufacturing and design defects that could put the public at-risk of suffering accidents and injuries.

Most recently, General Motors announced that the company’s compensation fund had cleared 124 fatality claims and hundreds more injury claims for their defective ignition switch. Initially, the company believed only 13 fatality claims were valid.
