Fracking Debate in Tangipahoa Parish Remains Peaceful
A recent debate on hydraulic fracking in Tangipahoa Parish remained peaceful as officials took no position on the drilling.
Following a lengthy discourse by local resident and president of the League of Women Voters in Louisiana Sandra Silfer and a rebuttal by a Kentwood resident, the council remained rather quiet on the issue. One councilman said he has no problems with the companies that are currently drilling petroleum wells in his area. Additionally, he said that the landowners are happy to be receiving money for drilling leases they have signed.
Following the meeting, another councilman noted that members of the parish council have discussed drilling activities, but at this time few complaints have been voiced by local residents.
Silfer counters that drilling companies in southeast Louisiana are not following proper procedures and have not always obtained the necessary permits for their operations.
The councilman though believes that drilling brings in jobs and money for landowners and could even provide money for the school district. The Tangipahoa Parish School Board recently leased drilling rights and if oil or gas is found on the land, the school system could gain a source of income.
