Millions of Americans Admit to Drunk Driving

Despite knowing that driving while intoxicated is wrong, millions of Americans admit to doing so in a recent survey issued by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

The survey reveals that 4.2 million Americans admit that they have driven drunk in the past 30 days, which is approximately two percent of all Americans.

Per the CDC’s findings, men between the ages of 21 and 34, who are binge drinkers, were most likely to drive drunk. This group of men made up one-third of all drunk driving incidents. Furthermore, men were more likely than women to drive drunk.

Another interesting finding is that drivers who do not wear their seatbelts are more likely to drive under the influence as well.

While it may not be shocking that younger drivers are more likely to binge drink, about four percent of adults are considered binge drinkers. Binge drinking adults are responsible for about two-thirds of drunk driving accidents. Anyone who consumes an excessive amount of alcohol in a small period of time is considered a binge drinker.

According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving, DUI accidents represent about 33 percent of all traffic fatalities. However, the state’s decision to pass an all-offender ignition interlock law in 2007 has led to a 36 percent decrease in fatal DUI accidents.

At Simien & Simien, we believe that all drunk drivers should be held accountable for their actions. If you have been hurt in a crash caused by a driver under the influence, contact our Baton Rouge personal injury attorneys for a free legal consultation.
