Suspected Speeding Driver Involved in Fatal LA 42 Accident

A driver in Ascension Parish was charged with negligent homicide after an accident on Thursday morning. According to Louisiana State Police, Sheri Thompson of Prairieville was pronounced dead at the scene. State police troopers arrested Dalyn Melancon of Port Vincent, who was driving the other vehicle.

The auto accident occurred on LA 42 (Oak Grove-Port Vincent Highway) east of LA 932 (Joe Sevario Road) near 7:30 a.m., between Prairieville and Port Vincent.

Trooper Jared Sandifer reported a 2006 Ford F-150 Melancon driving off the road, then crossing the center line had crashing head-on into oncoming 2007 Nissan Altima Sheri Thompson was driving. Reports indicated that Thompson passed from her injuries despite being properly buckled. In addition, Melancon suffered from moderate injuries and was not wearing a seat belt.

During investigations, it was discovered that excessive speeding was considered a factor in the collision, while impairment was not suspected in either driver; however, blood samples were sent to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab as a standard protocol.

Melancon is being charged with careless operation, negligent homicide and no seatbelt.
